Weird Science
My doctoral chair would not let me do anything “weird” for a dissertation project. He said “Do that after you get your degree.” I couldn’t understand such an attitude—everything should be investigated early and often, in my opinion. However, by the end of the program I completely understood his advice in the context of academia. I managed to decompress from the effects of institutional goals in the psych area with a real-world experience tutoring algebra to freshman football players, and somehow made my way to the real-world fantasyland of the gaming industry.
Alas, I don’t have time for research now, so I’m passing on a few ideas I’ve had, in hope that others will pursue them. These have been assigned to various categories which gamers and game makers must address constantly. Feel free to leave notes about related questions or new potential categories, on the feedback page.
